“Guys & Dolls” is a romantic comedy revolving around a group of gamblers led by Sky Masterson, a floating crap game held by Sky’s friend Nathan Detroit, and a bet between them that Sky can’t take Ms. Sarah Brown (head of the Save-A-Soul Mission) on a date.
There’s a very funny subplot regarding Nathan and his fiance of 14 years (Ms. Adelaide), who’s the headliner at the Hot Box nightclub. The show includes several show-stopper numbers (“Luck Be a Lady”, “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat”, and the title song “Guys & Dolls”) plus the well known solos “Adelaide’s Lament” and “If I Were a Bell”. The story line is based on a short story by Damon Runyon, “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown” and has a very unique style of dialog. Set in New York City in the 1950s, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, this is one of the most popular, fun, and well-written shows in all of musical theater!
