Characters
Adult Characters:
- DEWEY FINN: (PLAYS GUITAR) Male. Mid 20s-30’s. Vocal range B2-E5. An overly ambitious, rock-obsessed underachiever. A highly energetic and comedic role. Improvisation skills desirable. A wannabe rock star with big dreams. Dewey finds himself in urgent need of some cash after getting kicked out of his band. He impersonates a teacher to land a job at the prestigious Horace Green prep school, where he turns his class of straight-A students into a rock group and enters them in the Battle of the Bands. Great comedic/improv skills a plus.
- ROSALIE MULLINS: Female. Mid 20s-30s. Vocal range A3-D6. Proper and a bit uptight, Rosalie is the headmistress of Horace Green School. She has a secret love of rock music and yearns to recapture the carefree spirit of her youth. Soprano with operatic skills and a strong belt.
- NED SCHNEEBLY: Male. Mid 20s-30’s. Vocal range C3-F#4. Ned is an old friend of Dewey’s, and the two currently share a flat with Ned’s girlfriend Patty. He used to play in Dewey’s band, but is now a substitute teacher – who Dewey impersonates to get the job at Horace Green. Ned is still passionate about his music but tends to let his bossy girlfriend Patty tell him what to do.
- PATTY DI MARCO: Female. Mid 20s-30s. Vocal range B3-E5. Ned’s domineering girlfriend who lives with Ned and Dewey. She calls the shots in their relationship and isn’t too happy about Dewey’s presence in their flat – or his influence on Ned. Strong belt voice.
- ENSEMBLE: A range of characters to play teachers, parents, other adults. Strong vocal and acting abilities.
Child Characters:
- ZACK: (PLAYS GUITAR.) Male. Tween. Vocal range A3-D5. Zack is angry that his dad doesn’t listen to him and has a passion for music ready to burst out from inside of him. He knows he has more in him than he has ever been able to show. Pop/Rock Singer who moves well. Needs to seriously ‘shred’ on guitar, with exceptional solo skills.
- LAWRENCE: (PLAYS PIANO.) Male. Tween. Vocal range A3-D#5. A shy, under-confident boy, but a genius on the keyboard, who needs a free spirit like Dewey to lead him into the light. Pop/Rock Singer who moves well. Serious piano skills needed.
- FREDDY: (PLAYS DRUMS.) Male. Tween. Vocal range A3-D5. Freddy has lots of energy ready to be let out. He’s not as posh as some of his classmates and his Dad always reminds him how lucky he is to go to such a good school. Killer Drummer with a lot of personality. Pop/Rock Singer who moves well.
- KATIE: (PLAYS BASS GUITAR.) Female. Tween. Vocal range A3-D#5. A cool, collected girl, Katie is distinguished by her talent for the bass. Pop/Rock Singer who moves well. Guitarists, cellists and violinists are encouraged to apply.
- TOMIKA: Female. Tween. Vocal range A3-G5. New to the school, Tomika struggles to make friends despite her two Dads pushing her forwards. Tomika barely speaks until she finally summons the courage to open her mouth and sing out, so we have to be blown away by her sound. Pop/Rock/Gospel singer who moves well. Killer Voice.
- SUMMER: Female. Tween. Vocal range A3-D5. Summer is top of the class and things always go her way – she can’t imagine it will ever be any other way. She helps organize the band and keeps Dewey on his toes. Pop/Rock Singer who moves well.
- MARCY & SHONELLE: Female. Tween. Vocal range A3-G5. Clever and sassy girls. Back up singers with style. Pop/Rock singers who move well.
- BILLY: Male. Tween. Vocal range A3-D5. An artistic boy with a flair for fashion, but who wrestles with other challenges at home. Pop/Rock Singer who moves well.
- MASON: Male. Tween. Vocal range A3-D5. As eager as the others to enjoy school instead of dreading it. He is a whizz on the technical side. Pop/Rock Singer who moves well.
- SOPHIE, JAMES, MADISON: Female/ Male. Tween. Vocal range A3-D5. Pop/Rock Singers who move well. Sophie and Madison are technically the band’s roadies but also serve as backup dancers during performances. James is tough and reliable, making him a good security guard for the band. Mostly, he keeps an eye out for anyone coming while the band is secretly rehearsing!
